John 14

Hi ODM, Sorry for the late post. John 14 takes place the night before Jesus is crucified and is widely known as the Last Supper. For context, John 14 starts shortly after Jesus shares with his disciples of predicted betrayals and his ultimate death. The disciples are left confused and bewildered with facing the reality of Jesus leaving them. The chapter begins with Jesus saying to his disciples “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas expresses uncertainty and tells Jesus that they do not know where he is going and there is no way for them to know the way. Jesus responds with “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” Phillip responds with asking Jesus to show the Father and they will be satisfied. Another expression of uncertainty and confusion. Jesus shares with his disciples that the Holy Spirit will be sent from the father to guide them to the truth. The key theme in John 14 is love and trust. It is clear in the chapter that the Disciples are almost in a panic because of the uncertainty that they must face. Phillip and Thomas express their want to see concrete evidence of reassurance but that is not necessarily what Jesus gives to them. Instead, Jesus tells the disciples to trust in him, “I am the way the truth and the life.” To obey him and love him through action. “If you love me, keep my commandments.” John 14 reminds us to trust in the Lord always and he will gift us peace of mind and Heart. That faith isn’t the absence of confusion but choosing to trust in God through it all. That peace and security isnt necessarily the protection from difficulties but rather being anchored through it by trusting in the Lord. Have a good weekend ODM. ‭‭

Today's reading is a vision that someone has in which he sees a new heaven and a new earth. He sees that the first earth, which I presume is the earth we currently live on, has passed away. He also sees the "Holy City" which is where God will dwell among the people. This will be a place of complete joy and peace in which there will be no suffering, and this is exclusively for those who have been "victorious". They will dwell in this place with God forever. The vision ends with the fate of those who are not victorious or those who live immoral lives. Their end is the fiery lake of burning sulfur. Also described as the second death. This visions offers both a warning and hope for redemption. There is a place of complete joy where there will be no suffering or pain. And there is another place of darkness, suffering, pain, and misery forever and ever. This passage is a good reminder of what is at stake when we are choosing to follow Jesus.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  19 See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Good morning.  In this passage, God is speaking to the Israelites during their exile by the Babylonians to comfort them and give them hope.  In the previous verses (16-17), God brings to mind His deliverance of them from Egypt by parting the Red Sea and annihilating the Egyptian army.  Then in verses 18-19, He tells them to forget what He did that day and focus on what He will do for them in their lifetime – to bring them out of Babylon and into their homeland while providing for their needs (v. 19).  God demonstrated His grace and mercy to the Israelites by doing that for them despite their failure to honor Him with worship & gratitude and committing idolatry instead. Luke 1:39-45

Hi ODMPC, Today's passages are from Luke 1:39 to 45:  Mary Visits Elizabeth 39  At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,  40  where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth.  41  When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.  42  In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!  43  But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?  44  As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45  Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!"
